Twilight's Paradox
Lands and People: CaerfolkClan Holdings Mara-Caer'Beht - Guardians for the entrance into the Caerfolk lands. Their valley home is the shallowest of the Caers. The people are the most warrior like, and hold the most honor. Caer'Renn - known for the Valley of the Sun Caer'Veld - holds the Valley of Silence Caer'Lath - people called "stone-singers" which are gifted stone masons, and the Singing Mountain Caer'Shin - contains the Caverns of Water within their mountains Kahl-Caer - lives upon the Dark Slopes, and is ever shrouded in black mists/smoke The Trade City Also known as the City of Clouds, due to the high altitude and ever present clouds drifting above, around, or through the city. This city is where all major trade between the Caers takes place. Goods made specifically, or better, by each Caer travels to the City with the High Merchants of each Caer. They negotiate price for the goods, are responsible for the quality of the goods, and speak in trade council four times each year. The Trade City holds what lowlanders would by title call a palace, for it holds a throne, but to the Caerfolk it is the Hall of Ceremony. All official ceremonies, like the naming of a new High Merchant, or the naming of a babe of royal blood, and so on and so forth takes place within the homeland Caer and within the Hall. There is a Day of Ceremony, once a year, in which everyone gathers, and all of these ceremonies take place. The day can last well into the next, if many of these ceremonies need to happen. No one, once entered, can leave until all the ceremonies are done with. This day is followed by a week of feasting. In the lives of the very work-minded Caerfolk, this is their one reprieve from work, if they choose to take it. Not many do take the time off, however, for these are also the days when the most people are gathered and the trade flies fast and heavy. Government Each caer has a High Merchant. These High Merchants gather four times yearly outside of the Day of Ceremonies. When they gather, they discuss politics, trade rights, and recent happenings within each Caer, letting the others know about them. Importantly, these High Merchants are not of the blood of the family that Holds the caer. Each caer has a ruling family, and the High Merchant is that family's councilor. The High Merchants are responsible for inter-caer relations, trade, and laws. Each caer's ruling family is responsible for the safety, education, and honor of the caer and those that live within it. Everyone that lives within the caer takes the caer for last name, and will include "daughter of" or "son of" to their mother's name. Lineage is passed down through both mother and father lines, differing for each circumstance. Relgion and Ruling family lines are passed down thru mothers. Trade and Warrior lines are passed down thru fathers. Mothers are responsible for training trade and warrior skills, while fathers are responsible for training rule and management skills. Patron god Del'in and the Thro Far Del'in Stone is a very important symbol in their lives, and they consider the mountains which are their home to be the greatest works in creation, and model themselves after them. Mountains withstand weathering, hold fires deep within that sometimes explode, and even shift or move, but they are solid and dependable. The Caerfolk are among the best mountain trackers, for they instantly recognize even the most mundane set of mountain tops as a set map of coordinates, letting them know where they are. |
